History and Legacy of the Birkenstock Arizona
The Birkenstock Arizona is one of the most iconic designs from the German footwear brand Birkenstock, a company with a history dating back to 1774. This sandal first gained significant traction in the 1960s and 1970s, particularly in the United States, where it became associated with the counterculture and hippie movements. Known for its simple yet functional two-strap design, the Arizona appealed to those seeking comfort and orthopedic benefits when health-conscious living increased. Margot Fraser, a key figure in the brand's U.S. expansion, introduced Birkenstock sandals to the American market after experiencing their comfort firsthand in Germany. Initially sold in health food stores, Birkenstock slides gradually gained a cult following, especially among those who valued practicality and wellness.
The Arizona has since transitioned from a niche orthopedic shoe to a fashion icon, particularly in the 1990s and 2000s. When supermodel Kate Moss was photographed wearing them in the 1990s, it marked a turning point in their acceptance within mainstream fashion. Over the years, Birkenstock has collaborated with high-end brands and designers like Rick Owens, KITH, and Colette, adding a luxury twist to the classic Arizona sandal. The collaboration with Rick Owens featured avant-garde designs with more oversized buckles and exaggerated straps. In contrast, the Colette collaboration, known for its limited-edition exclusivity, brought a refined, minimalist aesthetic to the Birkenstock line.
Design and Variants of the Birkenstock Arizona
The Birkenstock Arizona has seen many variations over the years, each offering something unique to its design. The Big Buckle variant provides a more dramatic look with oversized buckles that make a bold fashion statement. The Shearling version adds a cozy, plush lining, making it ideal for colder weather while retaining the signature two-strap style. The lightweight EVA variant is water-resistant and perfect for the beach or poolside, providing all the comfort of the original with added functionality.
One of the defining features of the Birkenstock Arizona is its adjustable straps, which allow for a customizable fit. This functional design element has made the Arizona popular across a wide range of foot types and preferences, offering style and comfort.
Materials Used in Birkenstock Arizona
Birko-Flor® is a synthetic, leather-like material used in some Birkenstock slides. It's soft, durable, and easy to clean, making it a practical option for everyday wear.
Some Arizona models feature a suede upper, which offers a softer, more premium feel. Suede gives the sandals a stylish, textured look, making them versatile for casual and more refined outfits.
The footbed of the Birkenstock Arizona is made from cork, a renewable material that molds to the shape of your foot over time, providing a custom fit. Cork is known for its excellent cushioning and moisture-wicking properties.
The EVA variant of the Arizona is made entirely from lightweight, flexible foam. This highly durable water-resistant material makes it an ideal choice for summer activities or outdoor wear.
Birkenstock offers Arizona models made from leather and oiled leather, which provide durability and a classic aesthetic. These materials age beautifully, gaining character over time, and are often favored for their premium appearance.
Birkibuc™ is another synthetic material used in the Arizona line, resembling nubuck leather. It offers a similar look and feel to real leather but with added durability and lower maintenance.
How Should Birkenstock Arizona Fit?
The Birkenstock Arizona should fit snugly but not tightly. The adjustable straps allow for a customized fit, and the footbed should support your arches comfortably. The cork footbed molds to the foot over time, creating a personalized fit. Having a little room at the front and back of the sandal is important to avoid rubbing, ensuring maximum comfort.
How to Style Birkenstock Arizona?
The Birkenstock Arizona can be styled in many ways thanks to its versatility. For a laid-back look, pair them with casual jeans or shorts. If you're aiming for a more fashion-forward outfit, consider wearing them with cropped trousers or even a summer dress. Collaborations with designers like Rick Owens and Jil Sander have shown how the Arizona can be incorporated into high-end, minimalist wardrobes, making them suitable for various fashion preferences.
How to Clean Birkenstock Arizona?
To clean your Birkenstock Arizona, treating different materials appropriately is essential. Use a specialized cleaner and brush to remove dirt without damaging the material for leather or suede versions. The Birko-Flor® and Birkibuc™ variants can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. For the cork footbed, occasional cleaning with a mild soap solution will help maintain its integrity and appearance over time. Avoid prolonged exposure to water, especially for leather models, to preserve the longevity of your sandals.
